What's happening right now?

Door stuck open

Safely, right now

  1. Leave it where it stopped. Don't pull it down by hand or keep pressing the button.
  2. Keep people, pets and cars out from under it.
  3. The red release cord stays untouched while the door is open, because the door can fall.

Door won't close

Safely, right now

  1. Give the remote a rest: each new try strains the opener and can bend the door.
  2. Stay out from under the door. If you can see something in its path, like a bin or packed snow, say so when you call.
  3. Don't bypass or re-aim the safety sensors by the floor to make it close.

Spring snapped

Safely, right now

  1. Leave the door and the opener alone: no lifting it by hand, no pressing the button.
  2. Nobody and nothing goes near the door: people, pets and cars stay clear.
  3. If the door is open, leave the red emergency release alone: without the spring it can fall.

Car stuck inside

Safely, right now

  1. Don't drive into the door or try to force it open.
  2. Don't pull the release or lift the door if it feels heavy or you heard a bang. That usually means a broken spring.
  3. Arrange another way to get where you are going for now. The car can wait inside.

We service garage doors in Gormley for the seasons they actually live through, with cold-rated lubricants, bottom seals that stay flexible below zero, and hardware that stands up to road salt. The fix, explained · Gormley

What is the door doing?

EmergencyTorsion Spring ReplacementOne side of the door sits higher than the other in the tracks, and a lift cable is hanging slack or has jumped off its drum.

The fix

Torsion spring replacement restores the counterweight that makes a garage door light enough to lift. A sectional door often weighs more than a fridge, and the spring above the opening carries nearly all of that load, storing energy as the door closes and releasing it as it opens.

Until then

  1. When a spring breaks, the safe approach for the household is to leave the door where it is, keep people and vehicles clear, and avoid running the opener, which can damage the top section, the trolley or the gear drive.

  2. Pull the manual release only when the door is fully closed unless a technician asks otherwise; a door disconnected while partly open can move on its own if the springs are out of balance.

EmergencyOff-Track Garage Door ResetThe door came down fine but with a scraping noise, and now the vertical track on one side is bowed away from the wall.

The fix

When one side of a door drops and the sections tilt, the lifting cables are usually involved. Each cable runs from a bottom bracket up to a drum on the torsion shaft, and both must stay taut and wound evenly for the door to rise level.

Until then

  1. Never run the opener on a door that is off its track or hanging crooked; every cycle drives the racked door harder into the rails and can pull the track from the wall or tear a hinge.

  2. Pull the manual release only when the door is fully closed unless a technician asks otherwise; a door disconnected while partly open can move on its own if the springs are out of balance.

EmergencyGarage Door Cable ReplacementThe door went up as usual this morning, then stopped a third of the way with one corner higher than the other.

The fix

A cable visit runs in a set order. First the opener is disconnected and the door clamped so nothing can move.

Until then

EmergencyExtension Spring ReplacementOne of the springs beside the track is hanging loose at the front end, its pulley dangling, and a length of cable lies slack along the top of the…

The fix

Extension springs are common on the detached garages behind older houses, where a low ceiling left no room for a torsion shaft, and those garages are rarely heated. Damp summers, hard frosts and salt carried in on the car pit the spring wire over the years, and a fatigued spring most often lets go on a cold morning when the…

Book soonEmergency Release RepairIt is the coldest morning of the year.

The fix

Emergency release repair puts the manual disconnect on an opener into working order. That disconnect is the red handle on a cord below the rail, the spring-loaded lever it pulls, and the trolley that lets go of the door when the lever is thrown and grips it again when the two are brought back together.

Until then

  1. Pull the release with the door fully closed whenever possible, and keep the opening clear as you do.

  2. Lift a door by its handles or the gripping points on the panel face, never at the joint between sections, which closes as the door bends around the track.

Book soonGarage Door Opener Diagnosis and RepairThe wall button works every time.

The fix

Every diagnosis ends with the same two tests, because an opener that moves the door is only half fixed. First, a length of 2x4 is laid flat on the floor under the centre of the door and the door is closed onto it; it must reverse on contact and return to fully open.

Until then

  1. Pull the release with the door fully closed whenever possible, and keep the opening clear as you do.

  2. Never drive a vehicle at a closed door to get out; the door collapses and the stored tension in the counterbalance is released.

What the census means at the door

22%

Newer homes. About 22% of homes in Whitchurch-Stouffville were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Openers in newer homes usually already have photo-eyes and rolling-code remotes, so the common work is settings rather than upgrades: adjusting force and travel limits, replacing a worn gear or logic board, and adding a keypad, a second remote or a phone controller.

74%

Mostly houses. Single-detached houses make up about 74% of homes in Whitchurch-Stouffville (2021 Census).

Single-detached homes give a technician room to work: a driveway for the van, side room beside the tracks and a clear header. That means spring replacement, opener installation and full door replacement can each be finished in one visit with the door properly secured throughout.

Let us come and see the door in Gormley.

The visit in Gormley starts with the door secured and a walk around every part of it. The technician then shows you the worn part, the sound one beside it and the choice between them. Nothing is replaced for the sake of it, and nothing that is close to failing is quietly left out.

Whitchurch-Stouffville and Vandorf

  • Explanation before action. You will know what is worn, why it failed and what the options are before a single bolt is turned. Questions are welcome at every step.

  • A tidy garage. Drop cloths where needed, old parts bagged, floor swept. We leave the space as we found it, only with a working door.

  • Choices, not pressure. If a repair will do, we say so. If a replacement makes more sense, we explain why and let you decide.

ThenTune-up.

Lubrication, hardware tightening and balance adjustment restore a door that has simply been neglected.

IfOne spring broke and the other looks fine.

ThenReplace both springs.

The visit starts with the door rather than the parts.

Advice · (289) 212-6428

What should I do if the bottom seal freezes to the floor?

Do not keep pressing the button; the opener can tear the seal or pull the top section out of shape. Free the seal by clearing the ice along the threshold, with warm water poured on the concrete rather than the door, or by working a plastic scraper along the seal. Then treat the seal with a silicone spray. Keeping snow and meltwater cleared from the threshold and keeping the seal flexible with silicone prevents most repeats.

Are the springs involved in an off-track door?

Frequently, in one of two ways. Springs that are worn, broken or mismatched to the door's weight make the opener carry a load it was never meant to, dragging the sections out of line. And whenever cables must be re-seated or replaced, the spring tension has to be released and rewound to do it. The technician assesses the springs at the start and tells you whether they are part of the fix.

My door was replaced last year. Does the perimeter seal need doing too?

Often, yes. A new door is sometimes fitted against the original wood stop and its old fin, and the new door may sit slightly differently in the opening, so the old seal no longer meets it. If daylight shows at the edges or the fin is hard and cracked, a new seal set against the new door completes the installation and matches the fresh look of the door.

Can a manual lock be added to a door that never had one?

Yes. An inside slide bolt is the simplest addition: it fixes to the door's edge stile and a slot is punched in the track to receive it. A keyed T-handle can also be added, with a cutout in the centre of a section, a centre mechanism and bars run to both tracks. Where an opener is fitted, the new lock is set up so the two are coordinated from day one.
